Thank you for visiting. You are very welcome here.

My name is John and I have worked as a gold and silversmith for almost 50 years. Originally from Sheffield in England’s metalworking heartland, I moved in 1981 to settle in the sublime Devon countryside and where I now work from my studio in Tavistock. The view through my window is of the steep granite uplands of Dartmoor and the roofs of the town below.

My family has a long and established history working with precious metals. I began my journey in 1970’s Sheffield, home to many of the country’s most recognised designers and craftspeople. There I was apprenticed to my father, Jack Spencer, whose contemporary and mid-century modern designs remain sought after by collectors. My cultural legacy is very important to me, and I strive to preserve our family’s history and heritage in every piece that I create.

My work has encompassed almost every aspect of the trade. From the sublime (making hundreds of wedding and engagement rings) to the esoteric (precision soldering on the aerial arrays of a national TV transmitter). I am also a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, one of London’s oldest guilds. I consider myself extremely lucky to have spent my life devoted to a single career and which has allowed me to refine and hone my craft over many decades.

If you could like to contact me regarding a commission or simply to find out a little more about my work, please use the Contact form to send me a message. I very much look forward to hearing from you. Alternatively, you can follow me on Instagram where I regularly share stories and photos of life on the edge of Dartmoor.
